How do you measure success on LinkedIn?

If you’re a regular on LinkedIn you may take a look at your Analytics and Tools.

But do you actually know what you’re looking for?

Which statistics do you look at?

In my experience most people want impressions on their content. An impression is each time your post appears in the feed of other users.

But is that a measurement that equates to success?

In my opinion, no.

Having lots of views is great because your post is being pushed out by the algorithm. Even more so if it has good dwell time (i.e. people are stopping the scroll to read your post) or your post has a lot of engagement. Again this is great for visibility.

But also consider how having higher impressions (or views as they used to be called) gives you a quick dopamine boost. You wrote something that is popular and is being pushed out across LinkedIn.

This is also why people love getting higher impressions, it boosts that feel good chemical hit and offers some kind of validation.

But having a viral post doesn’t lead to money in your bank account.

Trust me, I've had a few viral posts and I'm buying a yacht just yet!

What should you be looking for?

The most important thing to measure on LinkedIn is PROFILE VIEWS.

How many views I’m getting ON my profile and WHO is looking at my profile.

If you are attracting people to look at your profile you are doing well on LinkedIn. Even better if people are spending time looking at your profile and then getting in touch via the DMs.

The other metrics are more about vanity.

Social Selling Index

The other metric I keep an eye on is the Social Selling Index score.

The SSI score is a measurement set by LinkedIn that rates your profile in your industry and network.

It is scored out of 100 and your profile is measured in 4 categories

  • Personal brand

  • Network (lead by Sales Navigator)

  • Engagement

  • Building relationships

If you’re new to the platform your SSI score may be about 20 - 30.

My aim for my profile and for my clients profiles is to sit around the 70 mark.

My current score is 73 - to me this indicates that I’m leveraging the platform well and I would aim to keep it between 70 - 75 as a LinkedIn trainer!

I would envisage a score of 20 - 30 to jump to around 50 - 55 within a few weeks of working with me. It takes time and consistency to get to 60 and above and there is definitely no quick fix to get to 70!

Also to note that scores are usually low in the purple ‘Find the right people’ category as this is LinkedIn’s way of pushing you towards paying for Sales Navigator to gain access to further insights (which I don't use!)

Take a look at your own SSI score here - and I'd love to know what yours is? Let me know by sending me a DM.

I hope you’ve found my insights useful and keep track of your profile views and SSI score to achieve success on LinkedIn.

And if you are reading this, thinking ‘I need to leverage LinkedIn but I’m not sure how to’ and you don’t know where to start with your content, engagement, and audience growth then please do get in touch.
